There’s something humbling about being snowed in. It’s as if nature decides to hit the pause button, reminding us how small we are compared to the vastness of its power. Yesterday morning, I woke to a world wrapped in a thick, quiet blanket of snow. The power flickering on and off, the roads are impassable, and I’m left with nothing but time—a rare commodity in a world that rarely stops.
At first, I felt a familiar frustration bubbling up. There’s always a to-do list, a deadline, or a place to be. But then I realized that being forced to pause is a gift disguised as an inconvenience. Without the hum of technology or the pull of external obligations, I’ve been given a chance to just be—something I rarely allow myself to do.
Navigating the Quiet
Without power, there’s no music or television to fill the silence. Instead, we lit candles and bundled up in blankets, finding comfort in the warmth of simplicity. Thankfully I still had some warm coffee from this morning, and sipped it slowly, savoring the warmth against the cold seeping through the windows. I sat by the window, watching the snow fall in lazy spirals, each flake unique yet part of the same beautiful storm.
I let my mind wander, reflecting on where I am in life and how far I’ve come. The storm outside feels like a metaphor for the challenges we weather, and the stillness inside is a reminder of the strength found in pausing to breathe.
Finding Creativity in the Stillness
With nowhere to go and no distractions, I’ve turned to writing—letting my thoughts pour out onto the page like the snow falling outside. There’s something cathartic about putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, when the power cooperates). It’s a chance to document this unexpected moment of solitude, to capture the mix of emotions it brings.
It’s funny how a storm can strip away our sense of control, leaving us with no choice but to lean into the unpredictability. In doing so, it also strips away distractions, leaving room for creativity to take root. Whether it’s journaling, drawing, or even just thinking deeply about life, the stillness invites us to explore parts of ourselves we often overlook.
Gratitude in the Chaos
As much as I miss the conveniences of modern life—heat, light, Wi-Fi—I’m reminded of how much I have to be grateful for. A warm blanket, a sturdy roof, the ability to slow down and appreciate the small things with someone I love. Even the quiet feels like a luxury.
And when the world eventually thaws, I know I’ll carry this moment with me—a reminder to find calm in the chaos, to embrace stillness when it comes, and to find beauty in the storm.
What about you? Have you ever been snowed in? How did you spend the unexpected stillness? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories!
